Bafang error 12: Current sensor error

Bafang BBS01/BBS02/BBSHD, M-series mid-drives and hub motors (UART & CAN displays)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The controller's current sensor reads a value that cannot be right, usually a non-zero current at rest. Without a valid current reading the controller cannot regulate power, so it shuts down. This is an internal controller fault.

Likely causes

How to fix Bafang error 12

  1. Power cycle once; if the code returns, it is hardware
  2. Unplug the motor and power on: if the code disappears, check the motor for a phase short (see error 09)
  3. Inspect the controller for burnt smell, discoloured connectors or water
  4. Replace the controller; the sensor cannot be repaired economically
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop straight away; this needs a controller replacement and a check that the motor did not cause it.
Warranty: If the bike or kit is under warranty (usually 1-2 years via the seller), contact them before opening anything, as opened motors and controllers can void the claim.
Typical cost: Controller EUR/USD 80-250; add a motor check if a short is suspected.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
