Yamaha PW error E5: Drive unit temperature error
Yamaha PW series (PW-X3, PW-X2, PW-X, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-SE, PW-CE) and Giant/Liv SyncDriveWarningRide with caution
E5 means the drive unit temperature sensor reports an abnormal or too-high value. When it is heat, assist is reduced or cut until the motor cools; when the sensor itself is faulty the code appears even on a cold motor. Also shown on Giant/Liv (SyncDrive) bikes, sometimes with a leading zero (E01) or as 'Er' followed by the number on older Yamaha displays.
Likely causes
- Long steep climb at high assist in hot weather
- Low cadence in a high gear making the motor work hard
- Dragging brake or under-inflated tyres
- Temperature sensor fault
How to fix Yamaha PW error E5
- Stop and let the motor cool for 10 to 15 minutes
- Continue in a lower assist mode with an easier gear and higher cadence
- Check brakes and tyre pressure
- If E5 appears on a cold motor or easy rides, have the sensor checked
Go to a dealer if: Dealer only if E5 appears without the motor being hot; the diagnostic tool shows the live temperature reading.
Warranty: Thermal protection is not a defect; a faulty sensor is covered in warranty.
Typical cost: Usually free; the motor is protecting itself.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
