Bafang error 08: Hall sensor error
Bafang BBS01/BBS02/BBSHD, M-series mid-drives and hub motors (UART & CAN displays)Dealer neededDo not keep riding
One or more of the motor's hall sensors is not giving a valid signal, so the controller cannot tell the rotor position. The rider notices juddering, a motor that grunts and stalls, or no movement at all. This is one of the most common serious Bafang faults.
Likely causes
- Water or corrosion in the motor connector (very common on hub motors)
- Damaged motor cable, often crushed at the dropout or axle exit
- Failed hall sensor inside the motor from heat or vibration
- Loose or bent pin in the 9-pin motor plug
- Controller hall input damaged
How to fix Bafang error 08
- Unplug the motor connector, inspect for green corrosion or water, dry and clean it, and re-seat firmly
- Check the motor cable along its full length for cuts or a crushed section near the axle
- Power cycle after cleaning; a marginal connection often clears for a while
- With a multimeter, check each hall wire toggles between 0 and 5V while slowly rotating the wheel (needs some skill)
- Replace the hall sensor board or the motor cable: a shop job on hub motors, doable at home on BBS mid-drives
- If a known-good motor still shows 08 on this controller, replace the controller
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop if the connector is clean and the cable undamaged; the hall board inside the motor needs opening the motor.
Warranty: If the bike or kit is under warranty (usually 1-2 years via the seller), contact them before opening anything, as opened motors and controllers can void the claim.
Typical cost: Hall sensor board EUR/USD 15-40 plus 1-2 hours of labour; motor cable EUR/USD 30-60; a new hub motor EUR/USD 200-400.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Bafang error 08?
Only if the cause was a loose or wet connector. A dead hall sensor will trip it every time the motor turns.
Can I keep riding with error 08?
No. Running a motor with a bad hall signal can burn the controller's phase drivers. Pedal home without assist.
Is a hall sensor failure covered by warranty?
Usually yes within the motor's warranty, unless water damage from pressure washing or a crushed cable is the cause.
