The controller expects to talk to the battery management system (BMS) over a data line and gets no valid answer. On Bafang CAN and smart-battery systems this can block power or hide battery information; on older setups it appears when a non-communicating battery is used.

- Battery not seated fully; data pins not making contact
- Corroded or bent data pins on the battery connector
- Battery BMS firmware or hardware fault
- Non-original or non-communicating battery on a system that requires BMS data
- Damaged wiring between battery mount and controller
How to fix Bafang error 22
- Remove the battery, clean the contacts, refit and lock it, then power cycle
- Inspect the data pins on both the battery and the mount for corrosion or bends
- Try the same model of battery from another bike if available
- Check the wiring from the battery mount to the controller for damage
- Have the BMS tested; a shop can read the battery over its diagnostic tool
