Bosch lists 503 simply as a drive unit fault, but in practice it appears most often when the motor has become too hot, for example on a long steep climb in Turbo with a heavy load. Assistance is cut or reduced until the unit cools down.

Likely causes

Long climb in the highest assist mode, especially with a heavy rider, cargo or child seat
Hot weather combined with low cadence (grinding a high gear)
Motor cover or frame insulation trapping heat
Internal sensor fault reporting a wrong temperature
Repeated overheating that has damaged internal components

How to fix Bosch error 503

Stop and switch the system off
Let the motor cool for 10-15 minutes in the shade
Restart and continue in a lower assist mode with a higher cadence (shift down, spin faster)
Avoid tuning devices and very low cadence, both of which overheat the motor
If the code appears without hard use or on a cold motor, a dealer should check the temperature sensor with DiagnosticTool
