E-bike throttle not working? Check these in order
A dead throttle is usually a setting, a brake sensor, or the throttle's own connector; the throttle itself fails less often than people expect. Note that many systems disable the throttle at a standstill or above a set speed by design.
Quick checks, in order
- Check whether the throttle is enabled in the display settings. On Bafang displays it is a menu item; on many generic LCDs it is a parameter in the advanced settings, and some setups only allow throttle from assist level 1 upwards, not from 0.
- Squeeze and release both brake levers, then try the throttle. A stuck brake sensor kills the throttle exactly as it kills pedal assist.
- Try the throttle while already pedalling slowly. Some controllers (and EU-legal setups) only allow throttle once the wheel is turning, or only up to 6 km/h.
- Try pedal assist. If pedal assist is dead too, the fault is not the throttle; go to the no-assist guide.
- Follow the throttle cable to its connector (usually 3 pins, near the display connector or at the controller). Unplug, check for pushed-back or corroded pins, replug with the arrows aligned.
- Turn the throttle slowly from rest and listen. A twist throttle that has lost its spring return or feels gritty has water inside.
- Look for a throttle error code: Bafang 04 or 05, generic controllers often show a throttle fault when the throttle voltage is out of range at power-on.

Throttle connector loose or wet
How to tell: Throttle works intermittently, or after the bike was washed. Plug near the bars shows green pins.
Fix: Clean and reseat. Replace the throttle if the cable is damaged near the grip; they are cheap.

Throttle hall sensor failed
How to tell: Everything else works, throttle gives nothing in every mode, error 04 or 05 on Bafang. Common after water ingress or a crash on the throttle side.
Fix: Replace the throttle with one matching the controller's voltage (most are 5 V hall) and plug type.

How to tell: Error on power-up that clears if you turn the bike on without touching the throttle, or the throttle is stuck slightly open.

By drive system
- Bosch: Bosch drive units do not have a throttle input; EU Bosch bikes have walk assist only. If a Bosch bike has a throttle it was added with a third-party kit, which Bosch does not support and which the dealer tool will flag. Walk assist problems are covered in a separate guide.
- Shimano STEPS: Shimano STEPS has no throttle; walk assist is the only push-button drive. Any throttle on a Shimano bike is an aftermarket addition outside the system.
- Bafang: Bafang codes 04 (throttle not in reset position) and 05 (throttle fault) are the ones to look for. On the DP-C18/500C/750C displays the throttle can be turned off and the start mode set; check both. The throttle plugs into the main harness with a 3-pin connector near the display plug.
- Yamaha PW: Yamaha systems do not have a throttle. Push-assist (walk mode) is the only non-pedal drive; if a throttle is fitted it is a third-party kit.
- Generic: KT controllers show a throttle error on start-up if the throttle reads above 1 V; power on with the throttle released. Check the C-parameters for throttle enable and whether it is limited to PAS 1 or above. Replacement thumb or twist throttles are universal 3-wire 5 V units; match the plug.
When to stop: Stop if a new throttle and clean connectors do not fix it and you would need to open the controller, and be aware that in many countries a functioning throttle above walking speed changes the bike's legal class; a shop may decline to enable it.

Not through the system. Any throttle on those bikes is a third-party device that bypasses the drive unit's logic, voids the warranty, and may make the bike illegal on the road where you live.
