Yamaha PW error E1: Speed sensor error

E1 on Yamaha PW and Giant SyncDrive systems points at the vehicle speed sensor: the drive unit sees no valid wheel signal. Assist stops or drops to a crawl and the speed reading disappears. Almost always a magnet alignment or cable issue after a rear wheel change. Also shown on Giant/Liv (SyncDrive) bikes, sometimes with a leading zero (E01) or as 'Er' followed by the number on older Yamaha displays.
Likely causes
- Speed sensor magnet moved or missing (spoke magnet or disc-mounted ring)
- Gap between magnet and sensor too big
- Sensor cable pinched, cut or unplugged at the chainstay
- Mud or debris between sensor and magnet
- Speed tuning device fitted
How to fix Yamaha PW error E1
- Spin the rear wheel and check the magnet passes the sensor mark with a gap of a few millimetres
- Realign and tighten the magnet or sensor, clean the sensor face
- Trace and reconnect the sensor cable, check for damage
- Remove any tuning dongle
- If everything lines up and E1 persists, have the dealer test the sensor
