E-bike battery draining fast? Separate real wear from normal range loss
Range drops for three reasons: the way the bike is ridden, the conditions, or the battery itself. Rule out the first two properly before you conclude the pack is worn, because most complaints about range are about assist level, tyre pressure, and cold.
Quick checks, in order
- Check tyre pressure. Soft tyres are the single biggest silent range killer; pump to the pressure on the sidewall or the upper end of the recommended range.
- Note the assist level you actually ride in. Turbo/Boost on a mid-drive can use three times the energy of Eco. Try one full charge in Tour/Trail and compare.
- Check the temperature. Below 5 °C a lithium pack gives 20-30 percent less range and the display will read the percentage down faster. Store the battery indoors and fit it just before riding.
- Lift each wheel and spin it. A dragging disc brake or a hub bearing that sounds rough will eat range. The wheel should spin freely for several seconds.
- Charge to 100 percent, ride a fixed route you know, and note the percentage used. Compare with the same route in the past if you can. A single number is not evidence; a repeatable route is.
- Look at the display's range or consumption figures if it has them (Bosch Wh/km, Shimano range estimate). A jump in consumption on the same route points at the bike, a stable consumption with less range points at the battery.
- Have the battery's health read out by a dealer. Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, and Specialized packs report capacity and cycle count through the diagnostic tool; that is the definitive answer.
Likely causes
How to tell: Range fine in lower modes, poor in top mode. Rider pedals slowly in high gears.
Fix: Use a lower assist level and a higher cadence (70-90 rpm). Mid-drives are far more efficient when the rider spins rather than mashes.
How to tell: Range fell when the temperature did, recovers in spring. Percentage drops quickly then partly recovers indoors.
Fix: Keep the pack indoors until you ride; a neoprene battery cover helps. Accept 20-30 percent less range in winter; it is not damage.
How to tell: Bike feels slow with the motor off, wheels do not spin freely, brake pads rub, chain dry.
Fix: Adjust the brakes, service bearings, lube the chain, check the tyre pressure. Free the bike up and the range comes back.
How to tell: Same route, same mode, same weather, less range every season. Pack is more than 500-800 cycles or 3-5 years old. Diagnostic shows reduced capacity.
Fix: Nothing restores lost capacity. Below roughly 70 percent of original capacity most riders replace the pack.
How to tell: Percentage drops normally then falls off a cliff near the end, or the bike cuts out at 20-30 percent. Charging finishes quickly.
Fix: Diagnostic test shows the imbalance. The pack needs replacement or professional cell repair; never open it yourself.
How to tell: Distances on the display do not match a phone GPS. Range looks worse because the bike thinks it rode less.
Fix: Correct the wheel circumference in the display settings.
How to tell: Cargo, child seat, trailer, or a change to hilly or windy routes.
Fix: Nothing broken. Plan for the load; a second battery or range extender if it is a daily need.
By drive system
- Bosch: Switch the display to the consumption screen (Wh/km on Kiox/Nyon, or Range in the Flow app). Typical Bosch mid-drive use is 8-15 Wh/km depending on mode. A dealer's DiagnosticTool readout gives the pack's remaining capacity and full-charge count; below about 70 percent capacity, replacement is due.
- Shimano STEPS: E-Tube Project (dealer) reports battery health as a percentage and cycle count. STEPS range estimates on the display are conservative in cold weather. Check the drive unit is in the profile you think it is; the app lets you tune each mode's assist and a strong Eco eats range.
- Bafang: Bafang mid-drives at 750-1000 W are thirsty by nature; 15-25 Wh/km in high modes is normal. If the display shows voltage rather than percentage, watch the sag under load: a healthy 48 V pack should not drop below about 44 V under full power when fresh. Set the current limit lower in the display menu to stretch range.
- Yamaha PW: Yamaha displays show range per mode. Cold weather and Extra Power mode are the usual reasons. Yamaha dealers can read the battery's remaining capacity and cycle count; the packs typically hold up well but the cells do age like any other.
- Generic: Without a diagnostic tool, do a controlled test: full charge, known route, fixed mode, note the percentage or voltage at the end. Repeat once. If the pack cannot deliver roughly 70 percent of its rated Wh (voltage x Ah) across that ride, it is worn. Check tyres and brakes first, they are free.

Probably not. Cold alone can account for a third of that, tyre pressure for more. Test again on a mild day with pumped tyres before deciding. If it is still half, get the capacity read out.
How many charge cycles should an e-bike battery last?
Quality packs are rated for 500-1000 full cycles before dropping to around 70-80 percent capacity. Partial charges count proportionally. Five years of normal use is realistic; heavy daily use shortens it.
Does charging to 100 percent every time hurt the battery?
A little. If you can, keep it between 20 and 80 percent for daily use and charge fully only before a long ride. But do not obsess; a pack that is used is a pack that is doing its job.
