E-bike stored all winter won't turn on? What to do after months in storage

A bike that was fine in autumn and dead in spring almost always has a battery that self-discharged below the point where the system can start. The fix is usually patience on the charger; the mistake is assuming the pack is finished after five minutes.

Quick checks, in order

  1. Press the battery's own indicator button. No LEDs at all means the pack is in deep-discharge protection; it will not power the bike until it has been charged.
  2. Bring the battery to room temperature before charging; a pack from a cold shed needs an hour indoors first.
  3. Put it on the original charger and leave it. A deeply discharged pack may show nothing for 10-30 minutes before the BMS wakes up and the LEDs start. Check again after an hour, then after three.
  4. While the battery charges, check the bike: tyre pressure (they will be flat), the display cable and remote connector, and the battery contacts in the frame for corrosion from a damp winter.
  5. Displays with an internal battery (Bosch Kiox 300/500, Nyon) will also be flat. After the main pack is charged, fit the display and leave the bike powered for an hour.
  6. Once the battery shows some LEDs, refit it and hold the power button for 3+ seconds. Expect a firmware or clock prompt on some displays.
  7. Do a short test ride and watch for codes; a dry-stored bike often shows nothing, a damp-stored bike may throw a communication error until connectors are cleaned.

How to tell: Stored at a low charge, pack LEDs dark, charger appears to do nothing at first.
Fix: Charge for hours, not minutes, on the original charger. If still nothing after 3-4 hours, dealer diagnostic; the BMS can sometimes be reset with the tool.
Battery stored flat too long and cells dropped below recovery
How to tell: Pack was already low in autumn and has been dark for six months. No LEDs after hours of charging.
Fix: Dealer test. If the cell voltage is below the safe minimum the pack is not recoverable and should not be force-charged; it is recycled and replaced.
Display internal battery flat
How to tell: Main pack charges fine and shows LEDs, but the display stays dark.
Fix: Fit the display and leave the system powered on for an hour.
Corroded contacts from damp storage
How to tell: Green or white deposits on the battery contacts, charge port, or connectors; intermittent power.
Fix: Clean with contact cleaner and a soft brush, dry, and apply dielectric grease. Badly pitted contacts need replacing.
Rodent damage
How to tell: Chewed cable insulation, nesting material near the motor or controller. More common than you would think in sheds and garages.
Fix: Repair or replace damaged cables. Check every cable run before powering up; a chewed cable can short.
Charger failed over winter
How to tell: Charger LED does not light when plugged in, or lights but the pack never responds; the charger was stored in the damp with the bike.
Fix: Try a known-good charger before condemning the pack.

When to stop: Go to a shop if the pack shows nothing after 3-4 hours on a known-good charger, if there is corrosion inside the battery bay or charge port, or if you find chewed wiring; those need the right tools and parts, and a force-charged flat pack is a fire risk.
