Shimano STEPS error E010: System error

E010 is Shimano's generic system error: the drive unit detected an internal fault or a communication hiccup it could not classify. Assist usually cuts out and the display shows E010 until you power-cycle. Very often it is a one-off glitch, but if it comes back every ride there is a real fault underneath.
Likely causes
- Momentary voltage dip or communication glitch during power-on
- Loose or corroded connector between display, battery and drive unit
- Water ingress in a junction (EW-JC130/EW-JC200) or display port
- Outdated or mismatched firmware between components
- Internal drive unit fault (rare)
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E010
- Switch the bike off, wait 10 seconds, switch it on again
- Remove the battery, check the contacts are clean and dry, refit it firmly
- Unplug and reconnect the E-TUBE cables at the display and junction box, look for green corrosion or bent pins
- Try a short ride; if E010 does not return, treat it as a one-off
- If it comes back on the next ride or repeatedly, book a dealer visit for an E-TUBE error log read
