Shimano STEPS error E010: System error

Shimano STEPS (all drive units, shown on SC-E5000/E6100/E7000/E8000 displays and via EW-EN100 LED)Fix at homeRide with caution

E010 is Shimano's generic system error: the drive unit detected an internal fault or a communication hiccup it could not classify. Assist usually cuts out and the display shows E010 until you power-cycle. Very often it is a one-off glitch, but if it comes back every ride there is a real fault underneath.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E010

  1. Switch the bike off, wait 10 seconds, switch it on again
  2. Remove the battery, check the contacts are clean and dry, refit it firmly
  3. Unplug and reconnect the E-TUBE cables at the display and junction box, look for green corrosion or bent pins
  4. Try a short ride; if E010 does not return, treat it as a one-off
  5. If it comes back on the next ride or repeatedly, book a dealer visit for an E-TUBE error log read
Go to a dealer if: A dealer with E-TUBE PROJECT Professional is needed when E010 persists after a power-cycle and cable check, because the drive unit stores a detailed error log that pinpoints the failing component.
Warranty: A recurring E010 on a bike under two years old is normally handled under Shimano warranty via the dealer, provided the bike has not been tuned or opened.
Typical cost: Usually free or DIY; a dealer diagnostic session typically costs the price of half an hour of workshop time.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset E010 myself?

Yes. Power off, wait 10 seconds, power on. Most E010 events clear this way and never come back.

Can I keep riding with E010?

You can pedal home without assist, but do not ignore a repeating E010; it is masking a real fault.

Is E010 covered by warranty?

If it keeps returning and the bike is within the warranty period, yes, via your dealer.
