Shimano STEPS error E011: Drive unit internal error

E011 means the drive unit itself reported an abnormality that it cannot recover from on its own. The motor stops assisting, and a restart may clear it briefly but it tends to return. It points inside the motor rather than at cables or the battery.
Likely causes
- Internal sensor or controller fault inside the drive unit
- Water that has entered the drive unit past a damaged seal
- Damage from a heavy impact (crash, curb strike on the motor casing)
- Firmware corruption after an interrupted update
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E011
- Power the bike off and on once to rule out a glitch
- Check the drive unit casing for cracks, and the cable exits for water or mud
- Do not open the drive unit yourself; the seals and warranty are lost that way
- If E011 returns after one restart, stop trying and book the bike in
Go to a dealer if: E011 almost always needs a dealer with E-TUBE to read the internal error log, and in many cases the drive unit goes back to Shimano for exchange.
