Shimano STEPS error E012: Torque sensor initialization error

E012 is raised when the drive unit cannot correctly zero its torque sensor at start-up. The system needs the cranks unloaded when the power comes on; if it detects load, or the sensor reads out of range, assist stays off. On most bikes this is a rider habit, not a fault.
Likely causes
- Foot resting on a pedal, or weight on the cranks, when the bike was switched on
- Bike switched on while rolling or while being pushed uphill
- Crank arm or chainring loose, or a bent crank interfering with the sensor
- Torque sensor drift or failure inside the drive unit
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E012
- Switch off, take your feet completely off the pedals, and switch on again while the bike stands still
- Check both crank arms are tight and nothing rubs on the drive unit
- Repeat the clean start twice more; a one-off E012 is normal after a bad start
- If it still appears with unloaded pedals, have the dealer check torque sensor values in E-TUBE
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is needed when E012 keeps appearing after correct, unloaded start-ups; E-TUBE shows live torque values and can recalibrate or condemn the sensor.
