No assist after braking? How to find and fix a stuck brake sensor
Brake sensors tell the controller to cut the motor the instant you touch a lever. When one sticks on, the bike thinks you are braking all the time and gives no assist, and the display often shows a brake icon. Testing is quick: unplug the sensor and see whether assist returns.
Quick checks, in order
- Look for a brake icon on the display with the levers released. Bosch (if fitted), Bafang, and most generic displays show one; if it stays on, a sensor is stuck.
- Squeeze and release each lever firmly several times. A sensor that is slightly out of adjustment can hang at the threshold; a few firm pulls often frees it.
- Find the sensors: on hydraulic brakes they are usually built into the lever body or a small magnet-and-reed-switch clipped to the lever; on cable brakes the cable runs through an inline sensor or the lever has a switch in the body.
- Check the lever returns fully. A sticky pivot, a bent lever, a hydraulic lever that does not return because of a sluggish master cylinder, or a cable with too much slack that holds the sensor open all mimic a stuck sensor.
- Unplug one brake sensor at its connector near the bars and test assist. If assist returns, that sensor or its lever adjustment is the problem. Repeat for the other side. Plug it back in afterwards; do not ride with sensors disconnected.
- On magnet-and-switch sensors, check the magnet is still glued to the lever and sits close to the switch (2-3 mm) when the lever is released; a lost magnet keeps the switch in the 'brake' state or the 'no brake' state depending on the type.
- Check for water in the sensor plug after rain; a damp connector can bridge the switch.

How to tell: Small magnet on the lever blade is missing or loose; brake icon stays on (normally-closed type) or never appears (normally-open type).
Fix: Re-glue the magnet in the correct position (usually marked) so it sits close to the switch with the lever released. Replacement magnets and sensors are cheap.
How to tell: Lever sits a few millimetres in from its rest position; a light tap frees it; hydraulic lever feels sluggish.
Fix: Clean and lube the pivot; on hydraulics bleed and check the master cylinder; on cable brakes check for a frayed inner or a kinked outer.
How to tell: Inline sensor on the cable stays triggered because the cable is under tension at rest, or the barrel adjuster is wound too far.
Fix: Adjust the cable so there is a millimetre or two of free play at the lever before the sensor moves.
How to tell: Magnet in place, lever returns, sensor still holds the brake signal; unplugging it restores assist.
Fix: Replace the sensor. Match the type: 2-wire normally-open or normally-closed, or 3-wire hall type on Bafang and some hydraulic levers.
How to tell: Problem after rain, green pins in the 2-pin plug.
Fix: Clean and dry the plug, apply dielectric grease, reseat.
How to tell: New brakes or a new sensor were fitted and assist has been missing since. Normally-open fitted where the controller expects normally-closed, or vice versa.
Fix: Fit the correct type or, on some controllers, change the brake sensor polarity parameter in the display's advanced settings.
How to tell: Cable pinched by the lever clamp or chafed at the bars; fault appears when the bars are turned.
Fix: Replace the sensor; the cable is part of it.
By drive system
- Bosch: Most Bosch bikes do not use brake sensors; the drive unit stops when you stop pedalling. Some cargo bikes and specific models do have them, and Bosch Smart System supports a brake light input on the rear light circuit that is unrelated to motor cut-off. If a Bosch bike gives no assist and has no brake sensor, look at the speed sensor instead.
- Shimano STEPS: Shimano STEPS does not require brake sensors, but some manufacturers fit them, mostly on cargo bikes and some hybrid bikes with brake-light integration. If fitted, they connect through the E-Tube system and a stuck sensor shows as no assist without a W or E code; unplug to test.
- Bafang: Bafang BBS kits use 3-wire hall-effect brake sensors built into the supplied levers or as add-on hydraulic sensors. A stuck sensor gives no assist and the display shows a brake icon. Unplug the sensor's yellow 3-pin connector to test. Bafang controllers can run with no brake sensors connected, which makes diagnosis simple.
- Yamaha PW: Yamaha systems do not use motor-cut brake sensors. If a Yamaha bike has an inline sensor it is for a brake light. No assist on a Yamaha is a speed sensor, torque sensor, or setting issue.
- Generic: KT, Lishui, and similar controllers use 2-wire (reed) or 3-wire (hall) brake sensors and will show a brake icon on the display while triggered. Some show a brake error code (e.g. 06 on KT-type systems). Unplug each sensor at the bars to isolate. The display's C-parameters often include a brake sensor polarity option; check it if you replaced the levers.

Can I ride with the brake sensor unplugged?
You can, and the brakes still work mechanically; the motor just won't cut when you brake. It is a fine diagnostic step and an acceptable short-term workaround, but the sensors are there so the motor cannot fight the brakes. Refit or replace them promptly.
Both brakes trigger the cut-off. Which one is stuck?
Unplug one at a time. If assist comes back with the left sensor unplugged, the left sensor or lever is the fault. If neither restores assist, the problem is not the brake sensors.
The bike cuts assist when I go over bumps but I'm not braking.
A sensor is close to its threshold and vibration trips it. Re-adjust the magnet gap, secure a loose sensor on the lever, or replace it. Also check the lever pivot is not loose.
