Shimano STEPS error W011: Speed cannot be detected

W011 warns that the drive unit receives no travel speed signal, usually because the magnet and sensor are misaligned. Assist may continue at a limited level or drop out entirely, and the display shows no speed. Almost always a magnet or sensor position issue.
Likely causes
- Wheel refitted with the magnet rotated away from the sensor
- Spoke magnet slipped or fallen off; disc-mounted magnet ring loose or bent
- Gap between magnet and sensor too large (more than about 3 mm)
- Debris or mud between sensor and magnet
- Sensor cable partially unplugged
How to fix Shimano STEPS error W011
- Spin the rear wheel and confirm the magnet passes directly over the sensor mark with a small gap
- Reposition the magnet or the sensor so the gap is minimal, and tighten it
- Clean mud and grit off the sensor face
- Push the sensor connector firmly into the drive unit
- If the alignment is correct and W011 stays, the sensor may be faulty; dealer check next
