Shimano STEPS error E014: Speed sensor error

Shimano STEPS (all drive units, shown on SC-E5000/E6100/E7000/E8000 displays and via EW-EN100 LED)Fix at homeRide with caution

E014 indicates the drive unit no longer gets a valid signal from the speed sensor circuit, or the wiring to it is broken or shorted. The display may show no speed and assist drops out. It is one of the most common codes after a wheel removal or a bike-rack trip.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E014

  1. Find the sensor on the left chainstay/dropout and the magnet on the disc or spoke; check the magnet lines up with the sensor mark and sits within a few millimetres
  2. Trace the sensor cable to the drive unit, look for pinch marks, cuts or a pulled plug
  3. Unplug and reconnect the sensor connector, dry it if wet
  4. Remove any speed tuning device
  5. If the wiring looks fine and the code stays, the sensor itself is likely dead; have the dealer test it
Go to a dealer if: Dealer diagnosis is needed if the sensor, magnet and cable all look correct; E-TUBE can show whether the sensor pulses at all and whether the drive unit port is at fault.
Warranty: A sensor that fails on its own is warranty; a cable crushed by a wheel change or a rack is not.
Typical cost: A replacement speed sensor unit (e.g. SM-DUE10 or the EP8 dropout sensor) is inexpensive, plus a short fitting labour charge.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
