E-bike display won't turn on or shows nothing? Start here
A dark or blank display with a charged battery is nearly always a cable, connector, or the display's own internal battery. The display is the most exposed electronic part on the bike and its connector takes the most abuse.
Quick checks, in order
- Confirm the main battery is charged by pressing its own indicator button. A dead pack looks exactly like a dead display.
- Hold the power button for 3+ seconds. On Bosch Kiox/Smart System and Shimano the button is on the remote or battery, not the display itself.
- Unclip the display from its mount (Intuvia, Nyon, Kiox 300, Shimano SC-E series) and refit it. Wipe the contacts on both sides with a dry cloth. Displays that have been removed and refitted many times get worn or dirty pins.
- Follow the display cable to the first connector, usually under the stem or inside the head tube area. Unplug, inspect for pushed-back or corroded pins, and plug back until it clicks.
- Check the remote cable the same way. On Bosch and Shimano the remote is on the same bus as the display; a bad remote plug takes the display down with it.
- If the display has an internal battery (Bosch Kiox 300/500, Nyon, Shimano SC-EM800), leave it fitted with the bike powered on for an hour. A flat internal battery keeps the screen dark even with a full main pack.
- Try turning the system on with the display removed. On Bosch Smart System the motor still runs from the remote; if it does, the display is the fault. On older systems the bike will not run without it, which is normal.

Backlight failed, display actually working
How to tell: In bright sunlight you can just make out numbers on the screen. Motor and assist work normally.

Cut cable from crank, wheel, or frame rubbing

By drive system
- Bosch: Purion and Intuvia are powered through their cable and have no internal battery; a dark screen is the cable, the mount contacts, or the display. Kiox 300/500 and Nyon have internal batteries and must be recharged on a powered bike. Smart System can run from the LED remote without a display, which makes a fault easy to isolate.
- Shimano STEPS: SC-E5000/E6100/E7000 displays run on the E-Tube bus; a half-inserted EW-SD50 or SD300 plug anywhere on the bus can blank the display. Check the plugs at the display, the switch units, and the junction under the motor cover. The display firmware can also be reflashed with E-Tube Project if it boots to a blank screen.
- Bafang: The DP-C18, 500C and 750C displays connect with a 5-pin waterproof plug; align the arrows and push until it seats. If the remote lights but the display doesn't, the display is faulty. Bafang displays are easy to swap and cheap to replace; make sure the replacement matches the controller protocol (UART vs CAN).
- Yamaha PW: The Yamaha display houses the power switch. If the display is dark with a charged pack, check the connector at the back of the display and the cable where it enters the down tube. Older Yamaha LCDs fade in the cold; that is not a fault.
- Generic: KT-LCD3/LCD8, King-Meter and similar LCDs use a 5-pin Julet/Higo plug. A dark display with a charged pack is the plug, a broken wire in the cable, or a dead LCD. If the LCD shows partial segments the LCD itself is failing. Make sure any replacement matches the controller (36/48 V and protocol).
When to stop: Go to a shop if the connector pins are damaged, if the cable runs inside the frame and needs replacing, or if the display shows water inside; these need the right spare parts and, on Bosch and Shimano, a pairing step.

Frequently asked
Can I ride the bike without the display?
Bosch Smart System and some Shimano setups run from the remote alone. Bosch Purion/Intuvia bikes, Yamaha, and most Bafang and generic hub systems will not give assist without the display. You can always pedal it as a normal bike.

Do I need to pair a new display?
On Bosch Smart System and Shimano, yes, a dealer pairs it to the drive unit. On Bafang and generic systems a matching display usually works straight out of the box, but the settings (wheel size, speed limit) need to be entered.
