E-bike stopped working after rain or washing? Dry it right before you test anything
E-bikes are rain-proof but not pressure-washer-proof or submersion-proof, and the weak points are the connectors, the display, and the charge port. The single most important thing is to stop applying power and dry the bike thoroughly before troubleshooting; testing a wet system can turn a wet connector into a dead controller.
Quick checks, in order
- Switch off and remove the battery straight away. Do not keep trying the power button; each attempt with water in a connector risks corrosion or a short.
- Dry the battery contacts on the pack and in the frame with a cloth. Leave the pack indoors, off the charger, for a day.
- Open what you can: remove the display from its mount, unplug the display and remote connectors at the bars, open any controller cover on hub-drive bikes. Let air get to the pins.
- Leave the bike in a warm, dry room for 24-48 hours. A fan helps; a heater pointed at electronics does not. Do not use a hair dryer on connectors or the display.
- After drying, inspect each connector for water droplets or green residue before plugging it back in. Clean with contact cleaner and a soft brush; put a smear of dielectric grease on the seals.
- Refit everything and test with the bike stationary first. Watch for codes; on Bosch and Shimano a wet connector usually shows as a communication error (424, E020, E022) that disappears once dry.
- Check the charge port on the battery for water before charging. Dry it and leave the cover open for a while.
Likely causes
How to tell: Communication codes, intermittent operation, display flicker; worse straight after the rain, better after drying.
Fix: Dry, clean, grease, reseat. Replace any connector with green corrosion that will not clean up.
How to tell: Condensation inside the glass, missing segments, buttons that do not respond.
Fix: Dry off the bike for 48 hours; if the screen does not recover it is a replacement.
How to tell: Controller box under the rack or in the down tube is wet inside; error codes or nothing at all.
Fix: Dry and inspect for corrosion on the board. Green or white crust on the board means the controller is done; replace.
How to tell: Grinding, wheel drags, hall sensor error (Bafang 08), motor runs rough after a deep puddle or a wash.
Fix: Remove the wheel and let the motor dry for several days axle-down. A shop can open the motor to dry and re-grease. Bearings that rumble afterwards need replacing.
How to tell: Charging fails or the charger trips after rain; port cover was open.
Fix: Dry thoroughly before charging. Corroded port pins are a replacement part on most frames.
How to tell: Problems started right after a jet wash. Water forced past the drive unit or motor seals.
Fix: Dry as above. Bearing seals that took a direct hit fail later; listen for rumbling in the following weeks. Never jet wash the drive unit, hub motor, or display.
By drive system
- Bosch: Bosch drive units and batteries are sealed to IP54 and shrug off rain. The weak points are the display mount contacts (Intuvia, Kiox 300), the remote plug, and the PowerTube contacts. A 424 or 422 code after rain is almost always a wet connector; dry and reseat. Bosch specifically warns against pressure washers.
- Shimano STEPS: E-Tube plugs are water-resistant when fully clicked in; a plug left half-in from a previous service lets water in. E020/E022 after rain is a wet battery connection or a wet plug at the junction under the motor cover. Dry, reseat, and the codes usually clear. Shimano's battery mount contacts benefit from dielectric grease in wet climates.
- Bafang: Bafang harness connectors (the yellow-green Higo/Julet plugs) seal well if the O-ring is present and the plug is fully pushed together. Code 30 (communication) or 08 (hall sensor) after rain means a wet plug. BBS units have a drain gap in the casing; a puddle deep enough to submerge the unit gets water in, and that is a shop job.
- Yamaha PW: Yamaha units are well sealed. The usual water victim is the display connector and the battery contacts. Dry, reseat, and test. Yamaha dealers can open the display connector cover to check for corrosion.
- Generic: Hub-drive bikes with an external controller and a bundle of Julet plugs are the most vulnerable. Open the controller bag or cover, dry everything, and check each plug. A controller with a damp board can work for a while and then fail; if you see corrosion, budget for a replacement. Keep the charge port cover closed and the display off the bike when it lives outside.

Can I ride an e-bike in heavy rain?
Yes. Every mainstream system is built for it. The problems come from pressure washing, submerging the motor, storing the bike outside with the display on it, and leaving the charge port open.
The bike works but the display shows condensation. Will it clear?
Often, if you take it off the bike and leave it somewhere warm and dry for a couple of days. If the fog stays or segments go missing, the seal has failed and the display needs replacing.
Is rice a good idea for a wet display or controller?
No. Rice does very little and leaves dust in connectors. Warm dry air and time do the work. A sealed box with silica gel is the only desiccant trick worth trying.
