Shimano STEPS error E022: Battery communication fault
Shimano STEPS (all drive units, shown on SC-E5000/E6100/E7000/E8000 displays and via EW-EN100 LED)Dealer neededRide with caution
E022 is reported when the battery replies to the drive unit, but its data is invalid or the communication line inside the battery is faulty. It is closely related to E020 but points more at the battery itself than at the contacts.
Likely causes
- Fault in the battery's internal management board (BMS)
- Intermittent wire inside the battery mount connector
- Deep discharge or a battery left flat for months
- Water ingress in the battery casing
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E022
- Power-cycle and reseat the battery once, cleaning the contacts
- Put the battery on the charger; if the charger LED shows an error, the battery is the culprit
- Try a known-good battery if available
- If the code follows the battery, it needs a dealer battery diagnosis
Go to a dealer if: Dealer with E-TUBE needed to read the battery's internal status; a battery that fails the diagnostic is replaced, not repaired.
Warranty: Shimano battery warranty typically covers BMS faults within the warranty period; deep discharge from neglect is a grey area.
Typical cost: Out of warranty this usually ends in a new battery, which is the single most expensive part on the bike.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
