E023 means the battery reported an internal abnormality such as a cell voltage out of range, a temperature sensor fault or a BMS protection trip. The system cuts assist to protect the pack. Treat this as a battery health warning, not a nuisance code.
Likely causes
- Cell imbalance or a weak cell group inside the pack
- Battery temperature sensor fault or extreme temperature during use or charging
- BMS protection triggered by a short or over-current event
- Physical damage to the battery
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E023
- Switch off and let the battery rest at room temperature for an hour
- Check the casing for dents, cracks or signs of swelling; if you see any, stop and do not charge it
- Try one full charge on the original charger and see if the charger completes normally
- Book a dealer battery check; do not keep riding on a battery that repeats E023
Go to a dealer if: A dealer must run the E-TUBE battery diagnostic; E023 is not something a rider can verify safely at home.
Warranty: Genuine cell or BMS faults are covered in warranty; physical damage is not.
Typical cost: Out of warranty this normally means a replacement battery; cell replacement by third parties is possible but voids any remaining warranty.
