E043 indicates part of the display (cycle computer) firmware is abnormal or corrupted. The display may show odd characters, freeze or reboot, while the drive unit itself is fine. Assist often continues to work.

- Interrupted firmware update on the display
- Display exposed to water after a cracked screen or seal
- Static or voltage spike on the E-TUBE bus
- Faulty display memory
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E043
- Power-cycle the bike
- Retry the display firmware update via the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app if the display is still reachable
- Check the display connector for moisture and dry it
- If the display cannot be updated, the dealer will reflash or replace it
