E043 indicates part of the display (cycle computer) firmware is abnormal or corrupted. The display may show odd characters, freeze or reboot, while the drive unit itself is fine. Assist often continues to work.

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E043

  1. Power-cycle the bike
  2. Retry the display firmware update via the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app if the display is still reachable
  3. Check the display connector for moisture and dry it
  4. If the display cannot be updated, the dealer will reflash or replace it
Go to a dealer if: Dealer with E-TUBE PROJECT Professional is needed to reflash the display over the wired connection, or to replace it if the reflash fails.
Warranty: A display that corrupts its own firmware within the warranty period is a warranty replacement; water damage from a cracked screen usually is not.
Typical cost: A reflash is a small labour charge; a new display (SC-E5000 to SC-E8000) ranges from cheap to a few hundred.
