Shimano STEPS error W010: Drive unit temperature high
Shimano STEPS (all drive units, shown on SC-E5000/E6100/E7000/E8000 displays and via EW-EN100 LED)WarningRide with caution
W010 is a warning, not a fault: the drive unit is hotter than its normal operating range and assist is being reduced or paused to protect it. You typically see it on long steep climbs in high assist, in hot weather, or when the motor works hard in a low cadence. It clears on its own when the motor cools.
Likely causes
- Long sustained climbs at full assist, especially with a heavy load
- Riding in a high gear at low cadence so the motor does all the work
- Hot ambient temperature and a motor cover with little airflow
- Brake rubbing or low tyre pressure making the motor work harder
- Very rarely, a temperature sensor fault
How to fix Shimano STEPS error W010
- Stop and let the bike rest in the shade for 10 to 15 minutes
- Continue in a lower assist mode and shift to an easier gear to keep cadence around 70 to 90 rpm
- Check the brakes are not dragging and the tyres are properly inflated
- If W010 appears on flat, easy rides in cool weather, have the dealer check the temperature sensor readings
Go to a dealer if: Only see a dealer if W010 appears under light load or cool conditions; E-TUBE can log motor temperature and check the sensor.
Warranty: Normal thermal protection is not a defect; a faulty sensor causing false W010 is covered in warranty.
Typical cost: Usually free; it is the motor protecting itself.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
