Walk assist not working? It's usually the button sequence, not the motor
Walk assist has a deliberately awkward activation on most systems so it cannot be triggered by accident. If the button press does not seem to work, the sequence is the first thing to check, then the sensors that walk assist shares with normal riding.
Quick checks, in order
- Learn the exact sequence for your system: Bosch Purion/Intuvia press WALK then hold +; Bosch Kiox/Smart System press the walk button then hold +; Shimano hold the down (−) button for 2 seconds, then keep holding once it beeps; Bafang hold − for 2 seconds; Yamaha hold the down button. Release the button and it stops.
- Make sure the bike is in an assist level above Off/0. On most systems walk assist is disabled in Off.
- Check the speed on the display when you spin the wheel. Walk assist needs a speed signal on Bosch and Shimano just like pedal assist; a missing magnet stops it.
- Squeeze and release the brakes. A stuck brake sensor blocks walk assist too.
- Look at the remote and its cable. The − or walk button is the most used button on the remote and its contacts wear; if other buttons work but that one does not, the remote is the fault.
- Try walk assist with the rear wheel lifted. It may be working but too weak to feel on a heavy bike on a slope; it is meant to move the bike at 3-6 km/h, not to climb stairs.
- Check whether the walk function was disabled by the dealer or in the app; on some fleet and rental bikes it is switched off.

Worn remote button

Walk assist disabled in configuration

By drive system
- Bosch: Purion: press WALK, then hold + within 3 seconds. Intuvia: same. Kiox 300/500 and LED Remote: press the walk button, then hold + (or the walk button itself on newer remotes). The motor drives gently at up to 6 km/h. It refuses if the speed sensor is missing (503) or a brake sensor is active. Bosch walk assist can also be greyed out when the bike is in a locked state.
- Shimano STEPS: Hold − until the display shows the walk icon and beeps, then keep holding. It disengages the moment you release. SC-E5000 and E7000 remotes have the walk function on the left switch. W011 (no speed) blocks it. In E-Tube the walk function can be turned off; check with a dealer.
- Bafang: Hold − for about 2 seconds; the display shows a walking figure and the motor runs at 6 km/h while held. On some displays walk assist is a menu option that must be enabled. A dead − button means a new remote; they are inexpensive.
- Yamaha PW: Push-assist: hold the down button on the display or remote; the motor drives at up to 6 km/h while held. Yamaha requires an assist mode selected and a valid speed signal. Some Yamaha displays need the bike moving slightly before push-assist engages.
- Generic: KT and similar controllers: hold − for 2 seconds for 6 km/h walk mode (shown as a P or walking icon). If the controller parameter for walk assist is off, it does nothing. Walk mode on generic bikes uses the same brake cut-off inputs as the throttle; a stuck sensor kills both.
When to stop: Go to a shop when the sequence is right, the speed sensor and brakes check out, and the remote is fine; that leaves the drive unit or a configuration lock that only the dealer tool can change.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
Frequently asked
Walk assist is too weak to push my bike up a ramp. Is it faulty?
Not necessarily. Walk assist is tuned to move the bike on a gentle slope at walking pace. Lower gears help on mid-drives because walk assist drives through the chain; select the lowest gear before using it.
Walk assist starts then stops immediately.
You have to keep the button held; it is a dead-man switch. If you are holding it and it still stops, the speed sensor is losing signal or the remote button is worn.
Can I make walk assist faster than 6 km/h?
No. The 6 km/h limit is a legal requirement in the EU and a design choice elsewhere. Nothing in the dealer tools raises it.
