Shimano STEPS error W013: Torque sensor initialization error
Shimano STEPS (all drive units, shown on SC-E5000/E6100/E7000/E8000 displays and via EW-EN100 LED)Fix at homeSafe to keep riding
W013 is raised when the torque sensor initialization failed for reasons beyond simple pedal load, such as the sensor reading outside its expected range at start-up. A clean restart often clears it; if it returns regularly, the sensor may be on its way out.
Likely causes
- Load on the pedals at start-up (same as W012)
- Crank, chainring or pedal not tight, causing vibration at the sensor
- Sensor offset drifting with age or after an impact
- Water in the drive unit
How to fix Shimano STEPS error W013
- Switch off, unload the pedals, restart with the bike stationary
- Check crank bolts and chainring bolts are tight
- Try three clean restarts; if W013 appears each time, stop guessing
- Have the dealer check the sensor range in E-TUBE
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is needed when W013 recurs after correct start-ups, since E-TUBE reads live torque values and can confirm sensor failure.
Warranty: Torque sensor failure inside the drive unit is a warranty exchange within the warranty period.
Typical cost: Usually free / DIY; a confirmed sensor failure means a drive unit exchange at significant cost.
